Blog about Vlogs

In middle and high school I played around with a couple videos but nothing has made its way to YouTube.

The types of videos that I enjoy watching online are generally stroll videos which is like a sorority march. I also enjoy watching music videos on YouTube.

For Example:

The hardest part of making our vlog for ED 270 was trying to actually get it uploaded to the blog. After a bit of toying with it, my teacher was able to successfully  help us upload the video though.

In my future classroom, if we have iPads I would challenge the kids to make videos explaining their different projects they make or if a child misses a day of class, assigning  another student to film a video explaining what happened at school that day.

Ipads are pretty expensive though and I'm not sure I would trust my 7 year olds with one.

Blog Prompt and Response Week 3

BLOG PROMPT:
ISTE/NETS for students #5
Digital Citizenship Students understand human, cultural, and societal issues related to technology and practice legal and ethical behavior.

a. Advocate and practice safe, legal, and responsible use of information and technology

b. Exhibit a positive attitude toward using technology that supports collaboration, learning, and productivity

c. Demonstrate personal responsibility for lifelong learning

d. Exhibit leadership for digital citizenship

Describe 2 different activities or lessons could you have students do that would promote Digital Citizenship.  What would the assignment be, does it encompass all four aspects of the standard?

I'm a history nerd at heart. A park ranger who fully believes in using the resources that the National Park Service offers us. So my activities would definitely be geared towards that.

Activity Number 1

Become a Web Ranger

I would have the kids get use computers to log on to the National Park Service Web Rangers website and create their profiles.  I would then group the kids who wanted to work on the history portion, the kids who wanted the science portion, the animal portion, the parks portion, and the people portion so that they could all help one another through. Then when they had completed their section I would have the kids collaborate on a brief presentation about what they learned in their section to show to the rest of the class.

Activity Number 2

Park Research

I would have the children research different national parks and then get into small groups based on which parks they wanted to know more about. Then I would have them gather information regarding the parks founding year, purpose, activities offered, acreage etc, by having them email rangers from that park with their questions and preferably if the rangers agreed Skyping the kids to answer the questions. They would present their information to the class using a prezi.

These activities would be good be with kids that are in fourth or fifth grade.

I Hang With Spock Now. Spock Is Cool.

Now if only this were real! It would be so zany in a way that only Matt Smith as The Doctor could pull off.

Buy Yourself A Wife

1.     What do you think the purpose of this site is? What might the goals of the authors be?

The purpose of Coincidence Design is to help rich men who may not have the best social skills finally get with their dream woman by watching her and finding out about her and then letting their client know these details then happen to make it so that the man and woman meet "accidentally".

2.     Who is the author? If it’s not stated in clear view, try checking the contact information. How is the author’s authority established – or is it?

The author's simply state that they are a private investigator and entrepreneur located out of Chicago. There are no names or anything else to give any information or establish credibility.

3.     What do others say about the authority of this author? Type the author’s name into the search box at www.google.com and see what you can find out.
Are they a known author?  Even when they are unknown, it doesn’t always mean they are telling lies.  What do you think?

Snopes, an internet myth debunking site says that this site has no authority and is actually fake.

4.     What organization sponsors the site? If this isn’t clear, try locating some hints—like maybe the e-mail address in the contact information.  Is there even a sponsor?  What does the sponsor(s) lead you to believe about the sites content?
There is no way to contact the investigators or any sponsors of which there are none. This makes the site seem even less credible.

5.     Do an Internet search to locate the home page of the organization you identified. What can you find out about the organization’s mission?

A quick google search found that this site has been up since the early 2000's and has been a hoax all along. The author apparently had even created other hoax sites before.

6.     What hints can you find in the URL? What kind of an organization sponsored the site? What kind of bias might be implied? The following list might help:
The site is a .com and obviously has personal opinions and for personal gain because their mission is to make $80,000 per male heterosexual client. They only take males who can pay that and are physically fit and seeking a female partner for marriage.

-->
7.     Go to www.register.com. Click on the Whois Lookup link just above the search box. Type the URL of the website you are checking into the search box, ending with the top-level domain (such as .edu, .com, .org, etc.). Click on the “Go” button. On the next page, type in the CAPTA letters and click the “Verify Code” button. Be sure to scroll down the next page to look for hints in the contact information. You might want to do a search at www.altavista.com to see what you can find out about the names you see.

After a bit of research, we were able to find that the website was created in Bellevue, Washington at a location that is now a dentiistry practice.

-->

8.     Find out who is linking to this site. Go to www.altavista.com and type “link:URL (with no spaces. Example: link:www.wou.edu). Read through the results to see  -->
who is sending people to visit your site. Does this tell you anything?

The search did not come up with any results for any links.

9.     Find out who is talking about this site. Go to www.google.com and type in “info:URL” (example:  info:www.amazon.com). At the bottom of the page, click on the link, Find web pages that contain the term

There is a link to the website that is from a previous session of this class in 2010. Other than that there was nothing of significance.

10.  Check to see if there are reports that this information is a hoax. Try some of the following sites:

Snopes has an article about this website that includes an old no longer active link to an article about investigating the design website.

Note: type in and search for key words, not the website address.

My Favorite Techy Things

I feel like Oprah talking about my favorite technology things. Except I'm not a millionaire so everyone who reads this isn't going to be surprised with a Nook in the mail. Sorry, I'm just a poor college student.

So what are my favorite pieces of technology, and how do I use them? First off, I should start by saying that I'm not overly technology savvy. I tend to like to live in the past, and am really into living history, so sometimes modern pieces of technology are a little bit over my head. That being said I do have a few favorite things.

1. My Iphone. I am seriously in love with my iPhone. I don't think one single piece of technology has ever changed the way I do things so much. I can watch Netflix, Facetime my entire family (not always the greatest when at college), research anything, listen to music and on top of that I can make calls too! I love how easy it is to use. My even less techy mom can also use her iPhone with very little help and she feels all cool because she has an iPhone. It's rather cute actually. This is hands down my favorite piece of technology by far.

2. My Barnes and Noble Nook. I was a bit reluctant to get an e-reader because I really do love the feeling of a paper book, but with an absolutely adorable Kate Spade brand cover, this was solved. Having all my books for both work (I'm a park ranger and that requires constant research) and pleasure on one device I'm able to switch back and forth without having to lug a bunch of books around. Plus moving into my apartment, being able to have my books all in one place was fantastic and very space efficient. I love it!

3. Pinterest. This is a website is a virtual bulletin board that can categorize so many things you like. Many weddings, baby showers, classroom plans, birthday parties, etc. can easily be pinned on pinterest. It's probably my favorite place on the internet. I personally use Pinterest as a way to connect with my man-friend (we have a shared board) and with my friends and sorority sisters. It's been a really great tool to keep up with people when we are separated by distance.

4. The Chive. The Chive is another website. They post multiple photo galleries throughout the day (many not family appropriate) that contain funny pictures of animals and people, and it being a male dominated website, girls. They have an obsession with Bill Murray and a slogan, KCCO (Keep Calm and Chive On) which can be seen on many t-shirts. Chivers, or followers of the Chive have been known to do awesome things when they see another one in public, like leaving enormous tips or buying them their meals, paying parking fees, etc. The Berry, is a Chive affiliate that is basically The Chive for women. It is just as great of a site and posts galleries about cooking, celebrities, funny animals, and of course men. KCCO!

5. Blogger. I absolutely love Blogger. I have multiple blogs and Blogger has provided me with a mobile outlet for my somewhat jumbled thoughts. My main blog has also been a way for me to inform some of my far away relatives updated on the major goings on in my life.

I hope you have enjoyed my top 5 favorite technology things. Don't forget to KCCO!

Welcome!

This is my ED 270 blog! So yeah, the not overly techy girl will be getting to blog for a class about technology. Oh boy! Beware! I'm super excited to get to blog for credit since I have a tendency to spend so many Saturdays avoiding homework by blogging (enter freshmen year of college). I'm hoping to learn enough so that I can finally change the background on my first blog, Helen's Heart which is stuck on this awful ugly background due to a messy breakup and my lack of knowledge of HTML. Anyway, I'm super excited to share my thoughts on this class with the world!
